Not such a Happy Halloween

This year for Halloween, Honey and I were going to dress as Sookie and Bill. Honey thinks this new love the entertainment world has for all things vampire is lame. So he was not exactly happy about my costume idea, but he agreed nonetheless.

I have my Merlotte's shirt and apron AND a bottle of True Blood to carry on a server tray. I think we could have totally pulled it off. Honey is tall and lanky, I am small and blonde. It is just meant to be.

Bad news is - I have to work.

I guess it will be Sookie and Bill next year.

Colorado - my new home?

Honey and I are fairly certain that we do not really belong in Texas at this stage of our lives. It may be wanting to live in a culture outside of the Lone Star State. It may be simply a yearning for a new life, built together on new ground. It definitely is the craptastic weather here.

Either way, we have been making a list of the places we are seriously considering (even though we are at least 2 years away from being move-ready). As of this week, Denver is #1 on the list.

Seasons? Check!

Outdoor activities? Check!

Metropolitan excitement? Check!

Greener living? Check!

However, truth be told I am scared. I am close to my friends and family. I love that they are all a mere phone call and car ride away. As a creature of habit with an awful sense of direction, change is hard for me. Yet I can't shake the hopefulness I feel when I imagine myself elsewhere; experiencing more than I have known thus far. I can not be afraid to move forward. There is a world outside of Texas (despite what some Texans may tell you) - and I WANT to see it.

All that being said - we are just in the talking stage. No real plans have been made. And it will be a while before we make any final decisions. Like many other things in our lives right now, this goal feels susceptible to the wicked tentacles of inertia.

My aim is to be intentionally kind to our hopes and dreams. To allow ourselves to create the life we want - whatever that turns out to be. And to be open to change, whether it be a change of location or a change of our minds.

Any Colorado advice from any one out there more experienced than I? Seriously - I could use all the info you have :)

Wednesday night Honey and I went to a fabulous lecture given by Blake Mycoskie (owner of TOMS shoes) on the subject of social responsibility. For those who aren't aware of this, the ideals of social responsibility, social justice and human kindness are near and dear to our hearts. This lecture also had an economic twist; explaining that by selling a useful and fashionable commodity, TOMS has managed to create a new method of giving: a sustainable charity. By utilizing their One for One method of donating one pair of shoes for every pair that is purchased, TOMS shoes will be able to give away more needed pairs of shoes than they would have on donations alone. Think of the possibilities if this method is applied to other businesses.

BTW - half the people on our Christmas list are now getting TOMS shoes = GIVING X2

I am back!

Perhaps you are wondering where I have been. The answer is . . . drum roll please . . . studying my tush off. This is my first semester in grad school, and it took me a little time to adjust to the new demands. Quite frankly, I didn't have the energy or inclination to post. But I now consider myself adjusted (mostly) and am eager to reconnect with all of you.

While in Austin, Honey & I came across a young and very talented photography team. We were impressed enough that, despite our budget, we decided to purchase this photo to hang above our bed. Unfortunately, I can not get a a larger photo off of their web site, but I urge you to take a look at the pair's page.

It is a husband & wife duo (which I always love) and their work is a great mixture of colors and urban qualities along with elements of nature. Plus they offer affordable pieces.

I have decided to get a tattoo. I have been thinking about it for years, and the time has come. It will say "I am as I was made."

I have always struggled with wanting others to accept me as I am. But I am now at a place where I am happy with all of the little ways that God made me an individual. I no longer feel the need to make apologies for who I am. And at the same time I am now fully comfortable making apologies for the mistakes I make.

The problem is, I am having a difficult time deciding on where to put the tattoo. These are all good examples of my top choices (all found on flickr). Feel free to weight in.

I haven't said much about the new job lately, but I think now is the time to let you all in on how much I hate it. And now that my grad program is only two weeks away, I am getting concerned about my ability to handle a difficult job that I dread every single morning and a new academic program.
The problem is that I will not be able to make the same kind of money anywhere else while I am still in school. Yesterday Honey & I had a long talk about how we could cut our expenses even more; and we decided a little more money was not worth being miserable. I felt peaceful last night when I fell asleep knowing that I had officially decided to quit my job.
But here's the twist (isn't there always a twist) - for the first time in a very long time I read a daily devotional this weekend. Today's calendar devotional was titled "Finish what you start."
Yep that's correct. So I am wondering if God is trying to tell me that I need to stick it out.
I don't have a peace either way now.

Not a day at the ranch

I used to be a big fan of Jewel. In fact, I even bought her poetry book (and no I am not ashamed to admit it). But I must admit that I completely forgot about her over the past couple of years. However, all of that changed last night.

She had an appearance on Chelsea Lately and it was really great. She was super cute, funny, quick-witted and above all - real. Not to mention how her life story really is interesting.

It is so nice to see someone famous who appears well adjusted, kind and basically normal.

I am now a recommitted Jewel fan.

Saturday night we went to a little dinner party with two other couples. It was a really great night. Honey & I tend to run in different circles, so I am always excited when we find other couples that we both like to hang out with. Fortunately for us, we have had a good run of couple outings lately.

I made these strawberry cupcakes as my contribution to the evening. It was a good feeling when they turned out to be a big hit. In fact, I received more than one request for the recipe. However, those kudos should be passed along to Recipe Girl.com - and this is not the first of her recipes that I have had success with. I am having a hard time at my new job.

Unfortunately, I can not really elaborate. I will say that I am exhausted from working long hours.

Unfortunately, my graduate program starts in less than a month, and I can not realistically expect to find a suitable job alternative before then. My plan is to stick it out and do the best I can. A really good friend of mine tells me to try focusing on her family motto: "Work hard, have a good attitude and say your prayers."

In the interest of staying positive, I have decided to end this post on the upbeat note otherwise known as Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.

I can not wait until this comes out!

I am so sorry to have been absent for a full week. I started my new job this week and it is intense. A lot of hours and a lot of learning to do in a relatively short period of time. Last night I fell asleep on the couch at 8 o'clock. When Honey came home from work, he had a hell of a time waking me. I think I may have mumbled something about being so tired; but I am sure it came out more like "m sss trd".

So . . . let's catch up.

Many many thanks to all who wished me a happy birthday. It meant the world to me to receive so many kind wishes.

It was a happy one indeed. We accidentally went on a 12 mile kayaking trip. The kayaking was on purpose, but the 12 miles . . . not so much. By the way, if anyone ever asks you how long it might take one to kayak on a mostly still river for 12 miles - the answer is roughly 8 hours. But it was fun none-the-less. And I do note how accomplished I felt afterward.

Ollie our new boy is starting to fit in just fine. Izzy is no longer exhibiting her passive aggressive protests; and I have even caught them playing a couple of times.

The new job so far is both difficult and stressful.

I still like the new job better than my sucky sucky old job.

The week that I have been missing from my blog is also a week's worth of missing workouts and housecleaning. This is not good. I am hoping that the dishes become so disgusted with my laziness that they start to clean each other.

I was recently inspired by a post I viewed on EVERYDAY MUSINGS to come up with my own list of goals. I love to write things down. It makes things feel so possible.

This is what I have so far. I hope it is an ever expanding list.

Live somewhere other than Texas. I really have been trying to figure out how Honey & I may be able to move to Colorado or Oregon. Even if it is just for a while.

Visit Europe. Preferably on honeymoon. (fingers crossed)

Earn my Masters degree. Then earn my PhD.

Buy a house and make it our own.

See Honey figure out his dreams and watch him accomplish them.

Volunteer at the Homeless Fair this time next year.

Figure out small ways to take care of others (without neglecting myself).

One full weekend

This weekend was absolutely lovely. On Wednesday (not actually the weekend, I know) Honey & I went with 2 of my dearest friends to see Wicked. FANTASTIC! I had the music stuck in my head for days after. We did have an invite to check out backstage via the super sweet girl who tailors my clothes (I'm short and need much hemming). Unfortunately, we were unable to locate each other after the show. Nothing stings quite the way a missed opportunity does, however the experience was still a positive one. Then on Friday, I went with my movie club - which in reality is really just me & my friend Oscar - to see Up. AGAIN FANTASTIC! I adored everything about it. The dog humor was especially heart-warming. I don't often buy movies, but this one will be added to my meager library.

Saturday night I went to a local bar with a group of friends to watch the UFC fight. Franklin vs. Silva. While my absolute favorite fighter is Forrest Griffin (*sigh*), Franklin is a close second. Franklin won = great night of fun.

Then on Sunday, we ended up taking in another dog. We named him Oliver, but are already calling him Ollie. Izzy is in full-on pout mode. I am hoping she adjusts soon. Bean, on the other hand, just loves him. I'll be sure to post photos soon.

Apparently Tuesday mornings bite the big one. At least this particular Tuesday morning does.
I left the house early today so that I could get gas and pick up a prescription that I need. However, somehow in between gas and my local CVS I managed to lose my debit card. I called the bank frantically to cancel my card only to find out that it will be 10 -15 working days before I get a new one. I therefore had no money to pick up my prescription (which I really wish I had right about now) nor did I have any money to pick up the breakfast tacos I intended to devour this morning.
To sum it up: Girl with empty belly and no antibiotics, gives free reign of her almost empty bank account to shady characters at local gas station.

Friday night Honey and I had a date night. We had a gift certificate to Soleil, a lovely restaurant/ wine bar. We tend to revolve our activities around food, so a tasty dinner out is always appreciated by the both of us. This was our first visit to Soleil and we were not disappointed. Escargot, pasta with bleu cheese and bacon, and scallops with a fantastic vanilla saffron sauce were all ordered and enjoyed.

We also went to see The Hangover. It was a bit funny and a bit gross. The ratio of funny to gross was not my fave. But I will admit to several laugh out loud moments.

Sunday was my baby sister's birthday. She is now 25 and according to my dad we are to call her 2-bit for the next year. My dad can be adorable in that way. We went out to my parent's to celebrate over mom's dinner and my homemade brownies.

Wanted - An Addition to the Family

Before we had Izzy, it took me a full year of begging, bargaining, and insinuating that his refusal may send me straight into a depression to convince Honey that we needed a dog. He eventually broke down. We went to a shelter, saw Izzy that day and immediately fell in love.
Fast forward 2 years and I think its time to add to the family.

I am a huge proponent of adopting animals. But I have to admit, I am highly interested in one specific breed this time around. The Newfie.
Even easy temperament? CHECK!
Lovable and kind? CHECK!
Good with kids? CHECK!
Highly intelligent & trainable? CHECK!
Capable of saving a drowning man? CHECK!

I'm smitten.
Considering that this breed can weigh as much as 150 lbs I think that it will take more than a year to get Honey to acquiesce to my desires.

It has been a year since the last time I visited the beach. This photo is from that time. Honey and I went for my birthday and it was so nice. He brought our canopy and our hammock and before I knew it he had created our own little personalized cabana. It really was lovely.

So I have had several interesting turns in my life's plot line over the past couple of days. Unfortunately some of it is basically un-bloggable.

For instance, I have been offered another job. And all I can really say here is that it really would involve leaving sucky job #1 in exchange for starting at sucky job #2.

(I know that there are several out there who would like to insert some sort of comment about how I am lucky to even have a job in this market. - But let me stop those peeps right here. I know that jobs are hard to find these days. And I am grateful for the job I have. However I desperately want to finish grad school asap so that I can actually work in the field I love.)
So to sum it up, I am unsure of how to make a decision here. I guess I can turn to the old "lesser of 2 evils" adage.

Also mostly un-bloggable - the unsettling realization of the approximate nearness of d-bag syndrome to one specific person whom I love. I wish she could run run run away.
Izzy's surgery is scheduled for June 10th. Say a little prayer for my little monster.
I am going to the coast this weekend with some of my friends. It was supposed to be a couples' trip, however Honey's mom is having gallbladder surgery so he can not make it anymore (insert another little prayer here). I will miss him the entire time I am sure.
Unimportant info to probably everyone out there - I am already L.O.V.I.N.G. this season of SYTYCD. And I am anxiously waiting for the season premier of True Blood.

Birthday Wish List Volume 1

My birthday in coming up in June and although I am on a strict budget, I can't help but want to buy myself a little something. I know that having a wish list in volumes may seem fairly self indulgent, but I'm ok with that. I figure that I need a little something to distract myself from the painful fact that I am indeed getting older. UGH.

Any (or all) of these items are on my wish list.

I want to pair this belt with a beachy yellow skirt and white boy-tank.

Random Updates

So I have had a bunch of random little events going on the past couple of weeks - and have not yet posted about any of it. I figured that since I am at work today, instead of spending some lovely outdoor time like the rest of America, now would be as good of a time as any to fill you in. Consider this my silent protest against the fact that I don't get ANY paid holidays - silent in that I will not jeopardize my job by bringing it up to my boss again but I will feel somewhat vindicated by the time I spent blogging at work rather than working.

1. Honey got a new car. This is good news. His previous car (which I had told him not to buy) was such a lemon / money pit. Now we have a Jeep Liberty. YAY! This means that we now have a car that is big enough to accommodate all 90 lbs of my Izzy. Plus, as an added bonus - it's reliable.
Oh yeah - AND Honey got a great great deal :)

2. Izzy needs surgery. She has been limping for several weeks, and after a couple of vet visits we found out that she has a condition called osteochondrosis chondritis (aka OCD). This means that she does not have cartilage in her shoulders the way she should. And she has to have surgery on BOTH shoulders. Her surgery is set for the 2nd week in June.

3. I hurt my pinkie. I think it is just a broken blood vessel but the finger is swollen and blue and it hurts like a biotch!

4. Honey's mom is having gallbladder surgery next weekend. This means that he will be out of town next weekend. He is a good son and wants to be there to help his mom. I really am a lucky girl.

5. I still hate my job - but I am working on having a better attitude about it.

Honey needs a new do

Honey has dark semi wavy hair, which I think is just adorable. However, he has kept it short since I've known him. After much bargaining, I have finally convinced him to grow it out. I am hoping for a laid back, messy (kinda like Zach Braff or Zachry Levi) look. The problem is that I am having a difficult time finding photos to give the girl who cuts his hair. If you know of any good photos, you are welcome to send some links in my direction.

Dance Dance Baby

Thursday begins the new season of So You Think You Can Dance! I am not embarrassed to say that I am so excited.

I have zero coordination, so my dance skills are limited to slow dances and dances in big groups where no one can really see me. But I do love to watch those with talent. And the best part is that I will not be watching alone. My girlfriends & I have established an official S. Y. T. Y.C.D / recipe swap night. Every Thursday we will meet at one of our houses to watch and cook. This is going to be good. . .

Puppies make everything better

Thank you to all of my darling readers that offered me bright words to help me through my F-U-N-K. I can't tell you how much I appreciate all of your kind thoughts.

I have good news though - I think that I am officially on the upswing of my little low mood. YAY!

I went to the Animal Defense League this weekend to play with some animals who needed a little T.L.C. And that always helps. Plus I spent a lot of snuggle time with my own cherished fur-babies.

Since we adopted Izzy, I did not get the pleasure of seeing her in her puppy stages. However she is part lab, so every time I see a lab puppy I get all warm and tingly in my soul. This photo is from one of my fave sites, The Daily Puppy. Doesn't it just make you feel so happy?

I have been in a funk for what seems like forever now. Truth be told, it has probably only been a week or 2 but still. . .
I am still having some problems with my energy level. BTW thanks to all who sent me their advice.
But now I feel all droopy in my heart too. I had this teeny tiny (possibly P.M.S. induced)meltdown with honey the other day. It went a little like this:

Me: I'm in a funk.
Him: Why?
Me: I/we have no security. Our jobs are less than stable, both of our cars are falling apart, I am still in school, we don't own our house, and let's not even mention the fact that I am still waiting for you to decide you are ready to get married already.
Him: Well . . .
Me: Just forget it
Him: No, what can I do to help? (Besides the whole ring thing).
Me: *sigh* *tears* - I have a headache
Him: I'm sorry. I love you.
Me: Can you just do the dishes for me? I'm going to bed.

Stupid hormones. Stupid bad economy. Stupid crappy energy level. I am going to work out tonight and hope it makes me feel better.

I am having an energy problem. I don't know what is going on with me, but I can not seem to stop feeling so tired. I am pretty sure that I am not sick (or getting sick). I work out on a pretty regular basis, and this has helped me to keep my energy levels up. But I guess it is no longer cutting the mustard.

I have all of the plans to clean my house, bake goodies, pull weeds in the back yard, and finally finish reading Anna Karenina (which, by the way, is the longest book ever written) - but once I get home from work or the gym all I manage to do is lay on the couch.

I am hoping for any advice you may have, lovely readers.

I would like to preface this particular post with an acknowledgment. I acknowledge that I post about different TV shows on a regular basis (as regular as you can get for a newbie blog anyway). But I would like to say that I have put Honey & myself on a strict budget. And when you are on a strict budget, the TV can be quite a cure for boredom.

Who am I kidding . . . I do love TV. Budget or no. :)

Honey's mom was in town this weekend. She stays with us when she comes to visit and she works really hard in her day to day life; so we tried to keep the activities to a minimum. A lot of rest and relaxation was in order. We rented Seven Pounds on Saturday night. I loved it. Such beautiful characters. So many authentic depictions of emotion.

I am a huge Will Smith fan already, so I may have entered into this with some bias. But I stick by my evaluation.

Fun little side note - I always tell Honey that I want to invite Will & Jada over for dinner one night because I think we would make great friends. I like to imagine a world where they would actually attend a dinner composed of Shepard's Pie and board games.

I found this recipe on one of my favorite food blogs. I made it last night after a rough day at the bad job. It was really good and easy. And I am not just saying that because I drank most of the wine that I bought for the recipe. I would recommend being cautious with your sage usage however - I think I added a bit much (remember I DID drink a bit of wine).

But I love my house

This is the kindof day I've been having.

Honey and I have been renting a house from one of his family members for 2 years now. We have been doing small things to improve the house this whole time. But we have been doing semi-big things to improve the back yard (which is a lovely size). And it has come to this. . . I love our house. I love the covered porch, I love the jasmine we have planted to grow up the porch supports. I love the french doors in the kitchen. I love the odd angles of the ceiling. I love the open living room. I even love the fact that it needs a lot of updating and much more remodeling. I love daydreaming about what we will do when we buy that house.
Fact is, I have always assumed we would buy it.
We broached the subject with said family member last month and we have finally heard back. And. . . .drum roll here please . . . darling house is not for sale.

*sigh*

How can this be? This is messing up my plans. And anyone who knows me knows how I hate to have my plans messed with.

But nothing can be done. So we are now looking for a different house.
All I can think is "but I love MY house." Too bad it is not actually mine :(

I can not get my stupid blog to do anything I want it to. For example, my earlier post today was supposed to have a completely thrilling trailer of True Blood. No such luck. Apparently I am incapable of uploading a video. That's right folks, that super easy little post a video tab does not work for me. Also - I want my blog to be wider. I want my banner to go all the way across the top of the screen AND I want to be able to post photos without having the entire right side deleted due to lack of space.

What is wrong with me? How is it possible that children can have successfully delightful blogs, yet mine looks like a child created it in a hurry, while having a temper tantrum, after a head injury?

Over the weekend, I went shopping. Most of the time this is considered a fun little excursion. However, this particular trip was planned in the efforts of finding a new swimsuit. I hate swimsuit shopping. I do not assume that this makes me any different from most women; but I will say that I am not 25 anymore. In fact, I am not 26 anymore and I am barely still 27.

As I tried on several different styles and colors with all types of cover up garments I realized something.

I have fat knees. I know this may sound odd, but it is true nonetheless. The area directly above my kneecaps look. . . well. . . fatty. I immediately called my sister, while still in the dressing room, and asked simply, "when did I get fat knees?!"

Her response? "I just thought you knew."

I did end up with a swimwear purchase. I hope it holds up well, because I will not be doing that again for a long time.

These are all dresses that I am currently obsessing over. I dream about them. I think about how they would look paired with all of my shoes and other accessories. I imagine the places I would go just to have an excuse to wear my little babies.

I am slightly upset at Anthropologie for being a wee bit out my price range. However, every time I swear off even looking at their stuff - I get the next catalogue and fall in love all over again.

I watch Make Me A Supermodel on Bravo (insert all "Ughhh reality tv" comments here). And I have to say, I am pulling for Jonathan. I don't usually go for the ultra ripped look. I am more of a Zachary Levi, John Krasinski kinda girl. You know funny & sort of lanky. Ok, Ok with the exception of Ryan Reynolds, who I adore and who just so happens to have abs you could slice meat on (to be fair he IS funny too).

Sorry - back to my point. Jonathan. Here's the deal. He loves loves loves his wife and son. It just makes him completely wonderful to watch. Hot & loyal. Hard combo to find.

I can't remember how I came across these photos by Roberto Dutesco (to be honest I think I saw them on someone else's blog) - however I will say that they have made an impact on me.

The raw beauty of these wild horses is enough to make me want to suddenly start taking photography classes.

They are out of my price range but that does not stop me from imagining my living room wall covered in the majesty of these wild beasts.
